Spiritual discernment and wisdom are crucial for every believer to navigate life in a way that honors God. Here are five biblical ways to develop these qualities:
1. Saturate Yourself in God’s Word
God’s Word helps us discern right from wrong. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is quick, and powerful... a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Regular Bible study aligns our thoughts with God's truth and shapes our decisions.
2. Pray for Wisdom
James 1:5 tells us to ask God for wisdom, and He will give it generously. Like Solomon, we should pray for an “understanding heart” to discern good and evil (1 Kings 3:9), trusting God to provide wisdom for life’s challenges.
3. Seek Godly Counsel
Proverbs 11:14 reminds us that “in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.” Surrounding ourselves with mature believers provides insight and wisdom, helping us make better decisions.
4. Walk in the Spirit
Galatians 5:16 encourages us to walk in the Spirit, allowing Him to guide our actions. As we submit to His leading, we grow in spiritual sensitivity and discernment.
5. Practice Discernment in Daily Life
Hebrews 5:14 says discernment comes by “reason of use.” Regularly applying biblical principles to decisions sharpens our ability to recognize good and evil.
By following these steps, we can develop spiritual discernment and wisdom, growing into mature Christians capable of making choices that honor God.
